Burton high schooler stuck and killed at bus stop

BURTON, MI (WNEM) -

Hearts are weighing very heavily Wednesday morning at Bentley High School. On Tuesday, one of their own was in a horrible accident.

A young lady whom police have not yet identified was at her bus stop near the intersection of Lapeer Road and Munson Avenue in Burton.

She told her friends she'd be right back.

"She was running home to grab whatever it was she forgot. She crossed southbound across Lapeer Road at that time she was struck by an eastbound vehicle." said Detective Matthew Bade, Burton Police Department.

Last year, she attended Carter Middle School in Clio. She had only attended Bentley High School for a week, but in that week she had already started feeling right at home.

"She had friends right away and was making more," said Principal Rex Hart, Bentley Junior-Senior High School. "She told a teacher the other day that she really liked it here, so it's a nice thing to think we welcomed her and she felt welcomed. "

Grief councilors were made available to anyone wanting to talk about the tragedy.

"They're young and they haven't dealt with death much, so even if they weren't very close it still is difficult." Hart said.

Authorities say the tragedy that took place here at the intersection, can serve as a wake-up call to everyone. To pay more attention to their surroundings in the early morning hours.

"With the darkness, true. It's a safety issue and not only do drivers need to be cognizant, but the kids at bus stops need to be cognizant as well," said Bade.

Her school just wants her family to know.

"Our hearts and prayers go out to the family and the friends of this young lady and if there's anything we can do, just let us know. "
