Prop 3: Amend State constitution for renewable energy

Posted: Updated:

PROPOSAL 12-3: A PROPOSAL TO AMEND THE STATE CONSTITUTION TO ESTABLISH A STANDARD FOR RENEWABLE ENERGY

This proposal would:

Require electric utilities to provide at least ¼ of their annual retail sales of electricity from renewable energy sources including wind, solar, hydro by 2025.  It would limit to 1-percent or less electric utility rate increases charged to consumers in order to reach compliance with the new standard.   It would also require the legislature to enact additional laws to encourage the use of Michigan made equipment and employment of Michigan residents.

If you vote YES, it means you support green energy and believe green energy will create jobs in our state.  It also means you are comfortable with the stipulation that only 1-percent of the cost caused by the renewable energy regulations would be passed on to consumers.  It also means you believe this measure will make Michigan more energy independent.

If you vote NO, it means you are concerned by the already high cost of electricity in Michigan and that you fear inflation will also drive prices up.  It also means you are doubtful that Michigan can achieve the 2025 goal and that it's unlikely our state can meet a similar goal for 2015.  It also means you don't think it's a good idea for Michigan to change its constitution to lock in a specific energy strategy.
