FRANKENMUTH, MI (WNEM) -
Runners were greeted with crisp fall air in Frankenmuth. About 1,000 people turned out for the first ever Bruckelaufe race.
The Bruckelaufe or "bridge race" included a 5K and half marathon. The course took runners over historic bridges like the 1904 Gugel Bridge, and the 1907 irontrestle Black Bridge.
"Our half marathon, crosses 13 bridges in 13 miles so it's kind of unique," said organizer Lucas Hart.
The Frankenmuth Jaycees organized the new road race. Hart said the group is creating a race series with the addition of the Bruckelaufe.
"We had the Winterlaufe in February, the Volkslaufe in July and with this race here in the fall. We're creating the race series and just providing more opportunities for our runners to come out and run Frankenmuth," said Hart.
TV5's Liz Gelardi handed out the awards to the top runners and walkers.
