Jeff Nagel is the airport manager at MBS and he's all smiles when he talks about his new passenger terminal here at MBS.
Instead of remodeling or adding on to the existing terminal, the airport authority chose to start from scratch.
"We didn't want to inconvenience the passengers during the four, five, six years of construction," said Jeff Nagel, MBS airport Manager. "It's a replacement terminal building. It was decided back in 2004 that the other building was substantially deficient. We needed to do something to protect the airport for the next 30 or 40 years. We didn't need to do a three- or four-year fix, we needed a long-term fix."
The new terminal construction was scheduled to be completed by the summer of 2013, thinking they would need the 2013 summer construction season to complete everything, however that wasn't the case.
It's going to open even sooner, as early as the end of this month.
"We were pretty successful last year in obtaining a couple of FAA grants and that work started on the outside of the building late last year and of course we had a mild spring. The work was able to start earlier this year and about four or five months ago we thought, hey is there a way we can open this October of 2012 which is almost a year, a full year ahead of schedule. "
So if your travel plans have you flying out of MBS before November first you'll be flying out of the old terminal, but if you're flying after November first, you'll be flying out of the brand new facility here at MBS.
"One of the factors of the existing building that the passenger likes the most, they always tell me how convenient it is, so we were very aware. We wanted to maintain the convenience." Nagel said.
