Officials see effects of hay shortage in Michigan

Posted: Updated:

Some animal welfare officials say they're seeing an increase in the number of cruelty calls about hungry horses, spurred in part by a nationwide shortage of hay.

The Detroit Free Press reports Tuesday that the Humane Society of Huron Valley is trying to find homes for three horses.

The organization's cruelty investigation director Matt Schaecher says people are having a hard time feeding their animals.

The shelter is dealing with about a dozen horse cruelty cases. reports the Humane Society of Huron Valley, which serves Washtenaw County, is asking for donations to help care for horses.

Some horse owners are digging into their winter hay supplies early. And prices have tripled and quadrupled in places, as scarce supply gets snatched up.
