SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -
Bentley Community Schools announced Thursday that John E. Schantz II, superintendent of schools for the Bentley School District, passed away at the age of 53.
Schantz, who had been battling lung cancer for the past year after being diagnosed with mesothelioma, died at his family home in Saginaw, MI, on Wednesday, Oct. 17.
Schantz served as the superintendent of Bentley Community Schools since March of 2005 and prior to taking the position, he held a number of positions within the St. Charles school district.
Schantz leaves behind a wife, two daughters, a son-in-law and two granddaughters. He came from a large family, with 13 brothers and sisters.
Visitation will be held on Friday, Oct. 19 from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at C.M. Humpula Funeral Home at 209 Entrepreneur Dr. in St. Charles. The funeral will be on Saturday, Oct. 20, at 11 a.m. at the same location.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to Bentley Community Schools or St. Charles Community Schools.
