Storage facility and apartment destroyed in fire

SAGINAW COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

A local man will return home to find his home destroyed.

Fire crews were called out to The Little Bar in the village of Oakley on Saturday morning. People in the bar were alarmed after someone walked in, stating he smelled smoke in a nearby building.

When firefighters arrived shortly after midnight, they found a storage facility connected to the bar completely engulfed in flames.

At least four fire departments responded to the fire, including Chesaning, Brady, Owosso and Thomas Township.

"Numerous departments were called in to assist," said Chief Scott Fall. "There's no water supply in town so we had to tanker all the water in from about four miles away."

The owner of The Little Bar and the storage facility, Chris Wolfe said a man lives in an apartment in the building.

"Only thing I have to worry about is my renter when he comes back," said Wolfe. "He had his rent paid and now he's got no place to live."

Wolfe said the man is working out of the state and that no one was home at the time of the fire.

There was some confusion over whether the bar caught on fire because its address was paged out.

Fall said the bar only suffered smoke and water damage, including some flooding in the basement.

Wolfe said a waitress was able to get everyone out of the bar so no one was hurt.

Officials shut down M-52 between 1st and 2nd Street for hours, before getting the fire under control. At around 3:30 a.m., central dispatch paged that only one lane had been reopened.
