Death of Autumn Elwell is Bay City Central's second loss in as many months

BAY CITY, MI (WNEM) -

Students at Bay City Central High School attended classes for the first time since the death of their classmate Autumn Elwell.

Monday was Autumn's birthday.

On Saturday, a semi-trailer struck the passenger door of a car that appeared to be backing up on I-96 and U.S. 131 near Grand Rapids, according to police.

Autumn was sitting in the passenger seat of that car and died as a result.

Nola Welter, a classmate and fellow band member, is still in shock about the news of Autumn's death.

"It's tough on all of us," Welter said.

Welter said that she has known Autumn since their freshman year at Bay City Central High.

"It's hard to not forget someone like that," Welter expressed.

Autumn was a sectional leader in the marching band.

"She was a big part of the band," Welter said. "We're all feeling it."

We're being told that all those involved in the crash, including Autumn, were wearing their seatbelts. It does not appear that alcohol was a factor.

This is the second loss in as many months. In September, teacher Peter Karoly died suddenly.
