Phone company says service restored after outage

PONTIAC, Mich. (AP) -

An Arkansas-based phone company says it's restored service after an outage that blocked calls to offices and businesses in a wide area of Michigan's Lower Peninsula.

Little Rock-based Windstream Corp. tells Michigan Radio that the service was restored by 3:30 p.m. EDT Wednesday.

Spokeswoman Erin Ascione says a computer card failed. She says other factors may have been a fiber optic cable that was accidentally cut by an outside contractor in Wisconsin and another cable cut in Indiana.

Windstream is a popular phone service provider to schools, governments and businesses in Michigan.

The outages affected customers from Oakland County north of Detroit to Kent County in West Michigan. Several businesses, hospitals and schools in Mid-Michigan were also impacted.
