FREELAND, MI (WNEM) -

MBS International Airport opened the new terminal for public tours this weekend. Visitors had a chance to take a look around without checking their bags or paying for parking.

The new $55 million terminal features a wave like roof that resembles wings in flight. It has an open design with lots of natural light and neutral colors.

"Well this is much more modern, much more updated, feels safer," said Diana Halstead.

Visitors like Halstead thought the terminal was very open but it's not much bigger than the old one.

"It's about 10,000 square feet bigger but it's much better use of space. They'll notice it's much more open," said airport manager Jeff Nagel.

The first flight out of the new terminal is Wednesday, Oct. 31 at 6 a.m.
