Local boy rewarded for heroic act

BANGOR TOWNSHIP, MI (WNEM) -

Carter Hebert got the royal treatment at school Monday.

The third-grader at Lincoln Elementary in Bangor was honored for showing courage beyond his years. TV5 told you last week how the 8-year-old took action when his mother went into diabetic shock while driving.

"I was like 'mom, you forgot to turn.' She was like 'I can't see.' She kept going through lights and I was like 'mom, turn into Texan.' Then she kind of went unconscious," recalled Carter Hebert.

Carter says he tried to call 911. When he couldn't get through, he didn't panic. He called his grandmother instead. Everyone made it out OK, but Carter's favorite toy - his iPad - wasn't so lucky.

"During the incident, it fell and broke," said Hebert.

When listeners of a local Internet radio show heard about Carter's bravery, they wanted to help.

"We just kind of read the story and said wouldn't it be cool to give him an iPad, and people started stepping up one after another," commented Josh Sharrow, of Last Choice Country radio.

In a matter of hours, more than $400 was raised to not only buy Carter a new iPad, but a few extra bonuses as well. "He was excited that he saved his mom's life, but he was still upset that he broke his iPad. So we just wanted to give him an iPad and show him that good things do happen to good people," added Sharrow.

Now, all is well in Carter's world.  He and his mom are safe. He's got a brand new iPad and a new title - hero, which he seems to like.

"I feel like a hero," said Hebert.

And his mother couldn't be more proud.

"You always wonder as a parent when you preach to them, are they listening? Evidentially, it paid off," said Shelly Hebert.
