1st flight takes off from new terminal at MBS

Ben Bergman of Essexville travels to Alaska every month for work. But his trip Wednesday morning was a little more exciting than usual.

He was one of 41 passengers on the first flight out of MBS International Airport's brand new terminal.

"I get to see a lot of airports, and this is pretty snazzy as far as airports go," Berman said.

Travelers were impressed by the updated and open feel of the new $50 million facility.

"It's very modern. The other one was very outdated, so we're excited," said Faye Banks of Midland.

Stacey Murrell of Saginaw was a little thrown off by all the changes.

"We didn't know. We went to the old airport and there was a gentlemen there that told us to come to the new terminal. So here we are," she said.

Once she followed the signs to get from point A to point B, she found the new terminal to be a pleasant surprise.

"It's beautiful. I'm going to go check it out," Murrell said.

One of the biggest improvements in this new terminal is travelers can buy food and drinks after they go through security, thanks to the addition of a new concession stand.

"Before we only had vending machines. Now we do have full service food and beverage. Come in and get a coffee in the morning, a beer in the afternoon possibly and some snacks. It's a positive thing for the passenger and an added convenience," said Ryan Riesinger, assistant manager of MBS Airport.

Passengers say convenience is what they appreciate most about the airport - the new updated facility makes them want to utilize it even more.

"I love this airport; it's really nice flying out of a small town airport," said Bergman.

"The other airport was a little old and there were some issues. So hopefully this will be good for the community," added Murrell.
