Saginaw home set on fire with children inside

Posted: Updated:

A woman and her three young children are thankful to be safe after someone purposely set their porch on fire Wednesday morning on South 11th Street in Saginaw.

One of those children is a 7-month-old baby.

TV5 spoke with the woman who rented the home, but she did not want to be identified because she fears whoever set her porch on fire may come back again.

"It makes me want to move out ... it's scary and dangerous ... I'm just scared right now," she said.

George Evans lives across the street from the home. Evans said there was a small window of time in which the fire could have been started.

"I parked my car ... was in the basement and just turned on the TV and then my wife hollered ... 'The house is on fire across the street,'" Evans explained.

Evans said he ran out of the house and onto the porch that was on fire. He said he started kicking items off the porch and tried to stomp out the fire.

"There were some other neighbors that ran over too and started knocking," Evans said.

The Saginaw Fire Department raced to the scene, but most of the flames were already out.

"Upon arrival, neighbors were extinguishing the fire ... and that was a great thing," said Ralph Martin, Saginaw's deputy fire marshal.

"The possibilities could have been tragic ... the family was asleep at the time" Martin added.

The fire is being ruled "very suspicious" but is still under investigation.
