GENESEE COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

Mt. Morris Township police and the state police are investigating after a woman was found Thursday morning naked, beaten and barely alive inside a ditch.

"Heard some noises, saw her struggling, basically for life, with severe injuries from some type of beating," said Chief Scott McKenna with the Mt. Morris Township Police Department.

Initial reports indicated that she'd been stabbed too, but police would not confirm that fact.

Authorities said the woman, who is described as being in her mid-20s, was found early Thursday morning on Carpenter Road between Elm and Webster, slightly north of Flushing.

Police tell TV5 the woman is from Genesee County and were not able to ID her until late Thursday afternoon.

"We just did identify her through fingerprints, she is a local, she is a local, and at this point, I can't get into too many details because we are just notifying the next to kin," said McKenna just after 3:30 p.m. Thursday.

The MSP mobile crime lab is currently investigating the crime scene. The woman was taken to Hurley Medical Center for surgery. She is currently in critical condition.

Investigators are trying to search for suspects connected to the crime.

Drivers are urged to find an alternate route as Carpenter Road could be blocked off for several hours.

"It's hard for the public and stuff to sit back and say, well, what has happened, because everyone's scared and uptight and understandably so.  Our biggest thing is we want to make sure we are very methodical in this so whoever did this to her we can put away," said McKenna.

McKenna says any information anybody has could be crucial.  If you know something or saw something on Carpenter Road, between Webster and Elms, on Thursday morning, call the Mt. Morris Township Police Department at 810-785-1311.

The news of this woman's discovery came just as TV5 was learning about the situation near Mt. Pleasant where the body of a missing 24-year-old woman was found along the site of a road. Read about that incident here.
