FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

Friends and strangers got together for a candlelight vigil to pray for 3-year-old Jordin Parkes' recovery Sunday.

The 3-year-old suffered a vicious beating and police say his mother's boyfriend is responsible.

The little boy is currently being treated at Hurley Medical Center, just blocks from where the vigil took place.

Residents lit candles and brought stuffed animals to place near a "get well soon" sign for the little boy.

Organizers of the vigil say their goal is to stop the kind of violence against children that caused a 3-year-old to be fighting for his life tonight.

"We want to make sure that the awareness is out there of child abuse, its got to be stopped, you either need to report it if you see it happening or go those people and offer help," said Ellie Mae, of Dominick's Law.

The person police say is responsible for beating the child, Robert L. Martin III, his mother's boyfriend, has been charged with first-degree child abuse. If convicted, he faces life in prison.
