Students clean up Saginaw Children's Zoo

SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

Students picked up rakes and bagged leaves at the Saginaw Children's Zoo. The teens volunteered their time to beautify the community.

A group of about 30 students came from the Saginaw Education and Training Connection. Part of their curriculum includes volunteer work.

"This is a chance for the kids to see firsthand that you can make a difference somehow, you can go, you can volunteer and give back to your own community. We don't have to go a long ways away to do this," said social studies teacher Eric Kern.

Student Makenzie Grant remembers visiting the zoo as a kid. She enjoyed helping out and said volunteering gives her a sense of responsibility.

"I think it helps us and betters us," said Grant.

The cleanup comes just in time because the zoo is part of "Holidays in the Heart of the City." The Saginaw Children's Zoo will have free admission Friday at 5:30 p.m. and it will be decorated for the holiday season.

For more information on Holidays in the Heart of the City visit the zoo's website.
