LAPEER COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

The Lapeer County Sheriff's department is searching for a fugitive in the Mayville and Marlette areas who is accused of attacking his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend.

The search began when deputies were called to Marlette Regional Medical Center after a person was assaulted and left on life support.

Authorities said Jesse James Carey, 24, from Mayville, placed a tree across Marlette Road near Maple Grove Road. Carey's former girlfriend, age 23, from Fostoria, was with her current boyfriend, a 24-year-old from Silverwood. When the couple stopped their vehicle to move the tree, Carey ambushed the current boyfriend striking him multiples times with an object.

Following the attack, Carey fled on foot and after extensive efforts, authorities could not find him. The victim has been transferred to Covenant Hospital in Saginaw where he remains on life support.

Police believe Carey is within the Mayville or Marlette area. A criminal arrest warrant for assault with intent to murder, a felony punishable by life or any numbers of years if he's convicted, was issued Nov. 13.

In addition, there are active arrest warrants for Carey out of the Tuscola County Sheriff's Office for resisting and obstructing and Michigan State Police Lapeer Regional Post for assault.

If anyone knows Carey's whereabouts, they are asked to contact 911 immediately.

Individuals with information can contact the Lapeer County Sheriff's Office at 810-664-1801 (extension 2451) or Lapeer County Central Dispatch at 810-667-0292.
