A new food pantry opened its doors today in Saginaw. It's the first of its kind in Saginaw and organizers are hoping it's the beginning of a new trend to help those in need.
"Just to stand and be able to give to the people, it just made me feel special. People, they come and they're like, 'thank you so much.' And I didn't do anything but give a box of food."
Margaret Dorsey was moved to tears as she helped jumpstart the opening of a new "school pantry" at Longfellow Elementary in Saginaw.
"The kids need help. The parents need help," said Dorsey. The school food pantry was her pastor's idea. Larry Camel of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church also realizes a lot of people are struggling. Half of the parents at Longfellow have already signed up for the new program.
"Each one will have a turn to come to the food pantry. We'll supply for a couple of meals during the week. Then, they'll come back next month," said Camel.
The "School Pantry" program is not federally funded. So, its success relies on support from area sponsors and donations from the community. "We will accept donations from anyone. The more donations, the more we can supply the food," added Camel.
"Most of it is going to be part of Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is a huge holiday for me," he said.
Denise Brewer says she has even more to be thankful for this year after she received bags of groceries from the school pantry.
She said, the food will help her dollars stretch further.
"A lot of things I don't have to buy that I would have had to buy. So, I'm thankful of that," she said.
Margaret Dorsey is just thankful to have a small part in helping those who need it the most.
"It just fills my heart. It just fills my heart up. I'm able to help somebody else," she said.
The school pantry is a pilot program. If it's successful, organizers plan to expand it to other schools in the area. You can help sponsor the "school pantry" by contacting the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan.
