FBI agents are seeking the public's help in identifying a man who apparently witnessed the sexual assault of a child.
Authorities said the person of interest first came to the FBI's attention in November 2005, after a series of photographs surfaced on the internet depicting a young girl about 10 years old, posing naked in sexually explicit positions.
The FBI said the man visible in the photographs was seen witnessing the exploitation of the child from a bed nearby. The child was assaulted.
Investigators said the photographs have been circulated as child pornography among various illegal internet forums.
An enhancement of the background of one of the photographs identified what appears to be a child's drinking cup from a QuikTrip gas station, the FBI said.
The image led investigators to believe that the photographs were likely taken prior to November 2005, in an area where QuikTrip stores are located, including areas in Kansas and Missouri.
"This could be a situation where the child who was exploited may be from this area or the greater Kansas City area or the Springfield area," said Bridget Patton, spokeswoman for the FBI.
Additional images have surfaced. The FBI said they analyzed the photos and were able to get "viable clues" from the images.
A baseball cap, displaying what could be the logo of a local sports team, as well as a partial image of what appears to be a telephone book are also clues that may provide information regarding the location of the endangered child.
Authorities describe the person of interest as an older man between the ages of 55 and 65, with brown eyes, gray hair, a full beard and mustache.
Other areas with QuikTrips include Dallas, Atlanta, Phoenix and Omaha, NE.
Anyone with information to provide should contact their local FBI office, submit a tip online or call the FBI's toll-free tip line at 1-800-CALL-FBI.
