MOUNT PLEASANT, MI (WNEM) -

A former Central Michigan University professor accused of having child porn on his work computer appeared in court Tuesday.

William Merrill was in Federal court in Flint for a preliminary exam.

A judge will determine if there is enough evidence for the case to go to trial.

He faces several charges, including possession of child pornography. Merrill is accused of having around 5,500 images and 26 movies showing the exploitation of children on his computer.

An IT expert allegedly discovered the pornography when he attempted to fix Merrill's work laptop.

Merrill resigned from his position at CMU earlier this month.

He's being held in the Isabella County jail on $500,000 bond.
