Employees at the Savoy Bar and Grill were busy Wednesday. The Saginaw establishment hosted a free Thanksgiving dinner for anyone craving a taste for the holidays.
Jim Atwood co-owns the business. He says they've done free turkey meals for six years. Twenty-eight turkeys, 15 giant pans of stuffing, 160 pounds of squash, and 60 pumpkin pies were prepared to feed 515 people. Atwood tells WNEM.com this festive day wouldn't be possible without a little bit of help.
"We also have so many people that have donated food and money for this cause. It's an outlet for people to do something for the community through someone else. It's a sense of giving back to the community. Giving back to people that maybe don't get a hot meal everyday," Atwood said.
Fefe Green is one of the people who stopped by to enjoy the holiday meal. She says she's grateful for what the restaurant is doing.
"Most times during the holiday season so many people are alone. They don't have nobody to be with. And if they can come down here they can meet new people and they get a meal," Green said.
Atwood calls Thanksgiving one of his favorite times of the year. He says he's thankful for the chance to make a difference.
"I call this our fun day. You know it's a little stressful but it's also a lot of fun because you see a lot of people, and you meet a lot of people, and you help a lot of people," Atwood said.
