Statewide blitz aimed at putting drunk drivers in jail

Posted: Updated:

Getting behind the wheel this Thanksgiving weekend probably isn't your best bet.

Saginaw County Sheriff Bill Federspiel has put state and federal dollars toward an all-out blitz to take drunk drivers off the streets.  The campaign started Thursday night and goes through Sunday.

"I say very simply, if you are drinking alcohol, do not drive, that's the one way you know you will not go to jail for drinking and driving," said Federspiel.

There will be double the number of police patrolling hot spots where drunk driving occurs often.  Half of the patrols will focus in on finding intoxicated drivers.  Saginaw County Sheriff Sgt. Kevin Stevens said the officers are trained well and they will find people breaking the law.

"There's absolutely no such thing as a professional drunk driver, there's a lot of professional drunks probably, but no such thing as professional drunk drivers," said Stevens.

Federspiel tells drivers out there a designated driver is the best bet for people to enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
