MOUNT PLEASANT, MI (WNEM) -
A local man has been charged in connection to a deadly stabbing that took place in Mount Pleasant on Saturday morning and is being held on $1 million bond.
Around 10 a.m., Curtis Richard Leachman, 25, from Mt. Pleasant, was charged with open murder and witness intimidation.
Tyrone Stanley, 20, was allegedly stabbed to death at an apartment on the 100 block of South Main Street between East Broadway and West Michigan around 4 a.m. . Authorities say Leachman threatened people who saw Saturday's killing of Tyrone Stanley outside the victim's apartment.
According to TheMorning Sun, Stanley was pronounced dead at McLaren Central Michigan Hospital in Mount Pleasant.
Leachman yawned during Monday's arraignment and told a judge the amount of his bond doesn't matter because he doesn't have any money. The defendant also says he "never threatened any witness."
WNEM.com caught up with a woman who is friends with the victim and the suspect. Maranda Morrison dated Curtis Leachman for three years. She can't believe her ex-boyfriend is facing an open murder charge in the death of their good friend Tyrone Stanley.
"Tyrone used to come over to our house all the time. They used to just hang out and chill. I never once thought Curtis would do anything like this. I'm just confused on the whole situation. I'm trying my hardest not to freak out with everything that's going on," Morrison said.
The judge has ordered he receive a court-appointed lawyer. Leachman remains lodged in the Isabella County Jail on $1 million bond. The Morning Sun also says Leachman has convictions for burglary, home invasion and domestic violence.
Police tell TV5 they are still investigating the case. Authorities have not disclosed a motive in the stabbing. Leachman is expected back in court later this week.
