Flint surgeon travels to Syria to help injured

FLINT, MI (AP) -

A 73-year-old Flint surgeon doesn't believe his medical duty should stay in his Michigan operating room or even within the U.S. borders.

More than 40 years after leaving Syria, Dr. Abdelmajid Jondy traveled to the Middle East to help the people suffering in the war-torn nation. He spent almost three weeks in Syria, where many Syrian people were left without food, water, shelter or medical care during fighting between rebels and the regime of President Bashar Assad.

Jondy says he went back to the nation he grew up in because helping people is why he became a doctor. The destruction he saw will never leave his mind.

Jondy tells MLive.com "the country is being destroyed" and he doesn't know how these people still function under these conditions."
