City: Saginaw 'cat condos' must go

Posted: Updated:

Frank Edmondson said cats are fed and have a safe roof over their heads on the piece of property he owns on Saginaw's east side.

"They're dependent on me now," said Edmondson.

He's owned this plot for the last eight years.  In fact, he didn't buy it with intentions to build a house on it, rather, he purchased four cat condos, at $3,500 a piece, to turn the land into a cat safe haven.

"The two larger ones are for shelter, then the two smaller ones are to feed them," said Edmondson.

But his, some may call, humane deed scratches some of the people who live nearby the property the wrong way.

"This is a menace to our area, and I don't like all of that," said Sandra Sanders.

Sanders lives right across the road from the cat condos.

"To see all this in front of my house, and I've got dogs, and every time one gets in the yard, my dogs attacking them, and I have to pick up dead cats," said Sanders.

And Sanders said she's wanted this cat area to go for a while.  She said other neighbors want the same thing and now, the city's stepping in.

The city of Saginaw has told Edmondson that the cat condos need to go because there's a city ordinance that says there can be no exterior structures unless there's a house on the property.

"It's an eyesore," said Sanders.

The city gave Edmondson 30 days to clear the cat condos. He has 27 days left.

"I guess these people would rather look at a home like that then a couple little structures like this, I just don't understand," said Edmondson.

Edmondson said he'll take down the cat condos but he's still going to feed the cats because he says he cares for them.  As far as the condos, he said he's willing to give them away for free if you have a good use for them.
