Jessica Schwerin has stage five kidney disease and instead of living like a typical fourth grader, she's dealing with a life-threatening condition.
"My life is horrible. I'm not having a fun time," Jessica said.
Jessica's mom Stacey told WNEM.com her daughter needs a new kidney, but she said the staff at Mott's Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor told her it would take some time to get one.
"They said about a year for a child. And then up to five years for an adult and I just think that's too long to wait," Schwerin said.
So Schwerin took matters into her own hands. Literally. Back in September she came out to Wilder Road holding up a sign that read "Please help!! My daughter needs a kidney!! I can't lose her." It was a desperate mother's plea to get her daughter a kidney to save her life. Then the day before Thanksgiving she got a call from the hospital. They had found a donor.
"I think the roof blew off my house with me screaming and crying after I hung the phone up with them of course. Because you can't thank the donor enough. He's saving my 10-year-old's life. Not only have they given my 10-year-old her life back, but they're giving me my life back. Because it just wouldn't be a life with out her," Schwerin said.
The identity of the donor is a secret. Whoever this person is, they're not looking for publicity. They just want to save a child's life.
Schwerin said the surgery is scheduled to take place in early January at Mott's Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor. She's hopeful her daughter stays healthy enough to get to the operating room, so she can receive a precious gift from a stranger. Meanwhile Jessica said she can't wait for the surgery, and she's grateful to the anonymous donor.
"Thank you for what you're doing to give up a kidney for me. I hope everything goes OK for you too," Jessica said.
A fundraiser is being held on Friday to help raise funds for Jessica. A pulled-pork dinner will be held at the Prime Event Center from 5-8 p.m. Tickets are $8 for adults, and $5 for kids older than 5 years of age. There will also be live music. The Prime Event Center is located at 1201 Washington St. in downtown Bay City.
