LENEXA, KS (KCTV) -

Police are investigating a reported attempted abduction of an 11-year-old boy after a man pointed a gun into the child's face.

Police were called about 2:15 p.m. Sunday to the area of 101st Street and Cherry Lane regarding an attempted child abduction.

When officers arrived, they found the boy inside Valley Wine and Spirits, located at 10103 Cherry Ln.

Police said the boy was riding his bicycle on the sidewalk near 101st Street and Cherry Lane when he was confronted by two men inside a white car. The two men apparently had been watching the child.

Lenexa police said the passenger pointed a black handgun at the boy and told him to "get in the car." The boy then ran to the nearby business and sought help from the clerk.

"He was aware enough of his surroundings to realize something bad may happen here because of the way this car was driving past," Lenexa Officer Dan Friesen said. "As the car drove up next to him, the passenger leaned out of the window and pointed a gun and told him to get in the car."

The alert clerk believed the boy and locked the door to the store as he called police.

The child told police the car was a "dirty," white, four-door passenger vehicle, with an unknown make or model. The car was last seen heading west on 101st Street toward Woodland Road.

Wednesday police released photos of a white vehicle that was in the area at the time of the attempted child abduction. Police said they would like to speak with the people in the vehicle and its owner. They are calling it a vehicle of interest because it resembles the description given by the child and was captured by traffic video cameras near the scene.

The male passenger who pointed the gun at the boy was described having a dark complexion, wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans. He had a small amount of facial hair, the boy told police.

The boy couldn't get a good look at the driver to provide a description.

However, police said the boy was very alert to his surroundings as he saw the vehicle first drive past eastbound at a very slow pace, then turn around and head back toward the west.

He had already gotten off of the bike in preparation to flee at the time he was confronted. The boy told police that he knew he shouldn't get into the car under any circumstances.

Friesen praised the boy for his powers of observation.

"He told the officer (the gun) was very similar to what the officer was carrying so we assume it's a semi-automatic type weapon," Friesen said. "He did the right thing. He got away."

Neighbors said they were jolted about a crime in a neighborhood where children play outdoors without fear.

"You get a false sense of security as far as where you are living and what you think could happen to you," Robert Pope said.

If you have any information, call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS or Lenexa police.

Police are checking to see if any other attempted abductions reported in other cities are similar.
