Saginaw County sheriff holds workplace shooter drill

KOCHVILLE TOWNSHIP, MI (WNEM) -

The Saginaw County sheriff partnered with a local business to simulate a workplace shooting Wednesday.

A "shooter" armed with a fake automatic weapon entered Glastender on North Michigan Avenue in Kochville Township Wednesday afternoon, and it was up to employees to respond in a way that gave them the best chance to stay alive. Then police moved in to hone their techniques in taking the shooter down.

Melvin Kuhl, safety administrator for Glastender, says that his company hosted this drill to be proactive about employee safety. "This is just a continuation of our policies, tornado drills, fire drills, now workplace violence," Kuhl said.

Saginaw County Sheriff Bill Federspiel says this is the third time this year that his department has trained for an active workplace shooter, but this drill was made more valuable because of the opportunity to cross-train with other departments.

"When I arrive on a scene and it is not just my deputies there, we will all know what to do," Federspiel said.
