A Naugatuck man was arrested after being accused of poisoning the oatmeal of his former boss, causing him to become severely sick.
William Lampron, 43, of Naugatuck, turned himself in to Waterbury police Wednesday.
Police said the boss began experiencing severe stomach pain after eating oatmeal that he kept in a canister in his desk. He said he checked the oatmeal and found what he believed to be SpeedyDry mixed in with the oats.
SpeedyDry is a granular substance used to soak up liquid spills such as water, oil and antifreeze.
After making the discovery, police said, the supervisor immediately suspected Lampron because he had been experiencing problems with him over his standard of work.
Police said after they interviewed Lampron, he admitted to lacing the oatmeal with SpeedyDry because he was angry.
"He admitted he placed the SpeedyDry in there. He admitted he was angry at his supervisor," said Waterbury police Capt. Chris Corbett. "He said he was close to retirement and he should be able to slow down the last few months."
The amount of SpeedyDry ingested was not life-threatening, police said, but ingesting it can cause severe intestinal distress and contains a known carcinogen.
"We definitely don't think he was trying to kill him, but he certainly doing a form of retaliation," Corbett said. "A way to assault him and get back at him. He thought he was being treated unfairly when he was simply told to do work he should do."
Lampron's boss, Greg Tortora, who is the Waterbury Parks Department supervisor, spoke exclusively to Eyewitness News.
"Hopefully, we can just move on from here," he said.
Tortora told Eyewitness News that he's still being monitored by a doctor to see if there is any long-term issues.
"I feel sorry for all involved," he said.
Neighbors told Eyewitness News that Lampron was "nice guy, friendly, keeps to himself."
"I don't understand it. Wow," said one unidentified neighbor.
Police said Lampron had been on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation, but he resigned shortly before his arrest.
Lampron showed up at his work Thursday to pick up his stuff after quitting the day before he was charged. He would not comment to Eyewitness News, and when he saw the media's cameras, he had his union rep get into the driver's seat so he could get into the back to drive out.
The oatmeal has been seized as evidence to be analyzed, police said.
Lampron was released on $5,000 bond and was given a court date of Dec. 13.
