Roscommon, MI (WNEM) -
Kirtland Community College is expanding to offer courses in Standish and Tawas next semester. Beginning winter 2013, Kirtland will offer English and math courses in Iosco and Arenac counties, bringing college resources to areas in northeastern Michigan with limited access to higher education opportunities. These course offerings are possible through collaboration between Kirtland Community College, the Iosco Regional Educational Service Agency (IRESA) in Tawas, Mich., and Standish-Sterling Community Schools.
"I am excited about helping the people in the Tawas and Standish areas reach their educational goals," said Nicholas Holton, Associate Dean of General Education at Kirtland. "[We] recognize the great needs in this area and are ready to provide new and innovative educational opportunities."
Ultimately, the goal of this partnership supports Kirtland's mission to prepare students to earn a certificate or associate's degree or to obtain the prerequisites needed to transfer to a four-year college to complete a bachelor's degree program.
Currently, English I, basic algebra and intermediate algebra will be offered to residents in and around the Standish and Tawas areas in the winter semester.
"Kirtland Community College has made a commitment to our area by offering classes at IRESA and there are plans to expand that opportunity in the future for our community. Kirtland is working with IRESA to look at what classes and programs will best match the needs of our community," said Dana McGrew, IRESA Superintendent.
Registration for winter 2013 is currently under way for all Kirtland locations, including Standish and Tawas, as well as all online courses. Current students are able to register online; new students are required to attend an orientation session prior to registering for classes. The winter semester begins Jan. 12, 2013.
Annually, more than 3,000 students attend a variety of certificate, two-year and transfer degree programs at Kirtland's locations – near Roscommon, the Gaylord M-TEC, West Branch, Standish and Tawas. Kirtland also offers a wide range of online certificate and degree programs, all of which can be completed from home.
To attend a new student orientation, or for more information on programs, registration, advising, testing, financial aid, scholarships and other services available to students, contact Kirtland Admissions at 989-275-5000 ext. 284 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
