"Marilyn" is believed to have been taken by Tashawn Treyvon Cheatham, 19, who was arrested Friday in connection with the death of Briana Naylor, 13.
(Source: Maricopa County Sheriff's Office) Tashawn Treyvon Cheatham, 19, was arrested in connection with the death of 13-year-old Briana Naylor.
Briana Naylor was found unconscious in her family's burning home.
PHOENIX (CBS5) -
A man accused of killing a 13-year-old girl last week told police he did it because she asked him to, according to documents released Monday by the Maricopa County Superior Court.
Tashawn Cheatham, 19, was booked Saturday and is being held on a $1 million bond on charges of first-degree murder, arson and theft in connection with the death of Briana Naylor.
Police records show Naylor's mother, Diana Rope, said Cheatham was homeless and a friend of her son's, who is currently in juvenile detention. Rope told police she allowed him to stay the night, but asked him to leave the next morning as she left for work.
Cheatham was alone in the home with Naylor Thursday morning after Rope and Briana's brothers had left the home, according to police.
According to court documents, Cheatham said he smoked "spice" in the mother's bedroom after Briana told him not to. He said she then asked him to kill her and that he and Briana strangled her with a sheet and then set the home on fire, court paperwork stated.
He told police he talked to a clerk at a nearby liquor store and told him what happened.
Detectives believe he is responsible for her death and that he also started the fires in the house. He is also being charged with theft because he stole the family dog and tried to sell it.
Briana was found unconscious inside the burning home Thursday morning after a fire was reported by a neighbor about 9:40 a.m. in the home on East Pierson Street in the area of Camelback Road and 12th Street.
Jonathon Jacobs of the Phoenix Fire Department said the girl was unconscious when she was found and went into full cardiac arrest.
"I don't know what happened but I knew it was suspicious," said neighbor Tamara Barry. "So many of us helped because we felt so sorry for the kids. The mom was never there."
A fire department spokesman said the girl was healthy and should have been able to get out of the house on her own.
Briana's family is pleading for the return of the their dog, Marilyn, which police said was stolen and sold by Cheatham.
Anyone with information about Marilyn or about the case is asked to call Phoenix Police Violent Crimes Bureau at 602-262-6141 or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS.
