BIRCH RUN, MI (WNEM) -

The Misteguay Creek Intercounty Drain Board is moving forward with a multi-million dollar project.

The board held a public hearing Tuesday night at the Birch Run Expo Center about a drainage project in Saginaw, Genesee and Shiawassee counties.

The ditch maintenance project, deemed necessary by the board, would take place along the Misteguay Creek drainage system.

Land owners in those counties could be assessed as much as 60 dollars an acre for the ditch repairs. Many land owners in the area attended the meeting, voicing their opposition for the project.

The project was first petitioned for in April 2010. Eight townships petitioned to stop the project in May 2011, but the case was dismissed by the Genesee County Circuit Court. After an appeal was filed by the townships, an appellate court decided the project would proceed.

The next step in the project is to discuss ways to keep costs down.

It's not clear when the project will get started.
