Security upgrades coming to Cass City Elementary School

Posted: Updated:
TUSCOLA COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

Jeff Hartel says security improvements are taking place at Cass City Elementary School.

The Cass City school superintendent had already been exploring options to upgrade security at the elementary school. But after last week's events in Newtown, CT - coupled with an alleged threat of violence from a former student here in Cass City - Hartel says upgrading security at the school has become top priority.

The district already has video surveillance cameras throughout the elementary building. Hartel tells WNEM.com the front door will now be locked at all times. Visitors trying to enter the school will also need to be buzzed in. Hartel says he's exploring other options like metal detectors and having an armed guard on duty.
