Prickly Pete, an orange and white domestic cat, has fully recovered from an unfortunate bout with a cactus and has been adopted.

Pete was saved from the needles of a cactus after Arizona Human Society Emergency Animal EMTs rescued him near 19th Avenue and Cactus Road on Dec. 19, said Bretta Nelson of the Arizona Humane Society.

Pete, the approximately 1-year-old feline, freed himself from the clutches of the cactus and the EMTs who had arrived to rescue him had to give chase.

A trail of cactus pods led them to the cat, which had become stuck in a fence.

It took veterinarians at the AHS' Second Chance Animal Hospital two hours to remove the spines from the cat's muzzle, eyelids, mouth and other parts of his body, Nelson said.

Pete was not claimed by anyone and was put up for adoption at 11 a.m. Wednesday. By 1:30 p.m., Pete had a new home.

Nelson said Jean Mann of Sun City came to the Humane Society with her son and granddaughter who were looking for a cat. Mann was not looking to adopt but when she heard Pete's story and met Pete - she adopted him on the spot.
