Birch Run schools cancel class for Friday due to 'situation'

BIRCH RUN, MI (WNEM) -

WNEM TV5 has learned the Birch Run School District has cancelled classes for Friday, Dec. 21.

The school district cites a "recent situation that has occurred" but did not release any further details. The closure also means all athletic and extracurricular activities have been cancelled.

The exact wording of the email sent to parents on Thursday is posted below:

Birch Run Area Schools will be closed for Thursday, December 20th and Friday, December 21st due to a recent situation that has occurred. This includes all athletic and extracurricular practices and events. I have reviewed information with local law enforcement and have concerns about whether a normal instructional day can be achieved. My conclusion is that canceling school is the appropriate thing to do. I hope all of you enjoy a safe and peaceful holiday season.

Sincerely,

David Bush, Superintendent of Schools

Dozens of schools in two Mid-Michigan counties have canceled classes for the rest of the week amid rumored threats of violence and problems related to doomsday scenarios based on the Mayan calendar.

Schools in Genesee and Lapeer counties started the Christmas break Wednesday night rather than hold classes Thursday and Friday. The decision affected thousands of students.

In a statement, Genesee County school officials say the fatal shooting at a Connecticut school last week "changed all of us." Lapeer-area schools Superintendent Matt Wandrie says rumors have become a major distraction for students and staff and have disrupted learning.

Friday is supposedly when ancient Mayans prophesized the end of the world.
