Saginaw Township Community Schools have issued a statement that classes will be canceled for Friday, Dec. 21.

The cancellation follows dozens of other school districts' decisions to cancel classes on Friday. Some districts began sending students home for the winter break on Tuesday.

The statement to parents mentions rumors ant threats, but that none have been "substantiated."

Read the message in its entirety below:

Dear Parents, Guardians and Community Members,

Although the rumors and threats of this past week have NOT been substantiated, the love parents have for their children and the fear and anxiety of the school community cannot be ignored. Therefore, as a precautionary measure and to reassure our community of the safe environment our schools provide, Saginaw Township Community Schools will be closed tomorrow, Friday, December 21 st, 2012. A determination regarding the make-up day will be established at a later time.

All non-instructional staff are to report.

Step by Step and the After School Activity Club are open from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM at Arrowwood only.

All athletic events and activities are cancelled with the exception of the off-site hockey tournament. It will be held as scheduled.

Schools in Genesee and Lapeer counties started the Christmas break Wednesday night rather than hold classes Thursday and Friday. The decision affected thousands of students.

In a statement, Genesee County school officials say the fatal shooting at a Connecticut school last week "changed all of us." Lapeer-area schools Superintendent Matt Wandrie says rumors have become a major distraction for students and staff and have disrupted learning.
