BAY COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

A widespread power outage left many people in the dark in Bay County on Friday.

Several businesses were affected and the Bay City mall even shut down just a few days before Christmas.

Friday was anything but a normal workday for Abi Roy, an assistant manager at Big Apple Bagels in Bay City.

"We were in the middle of trying to make a bunch of orders for people and the power suddenly went out," Roy said.

Big Apple Bagels was just one of dozens of businesses left in the dark for hours Friday morning after losing power due to a widespread outage.

Roy was left with no choice but to disappoint customers with their limited options -- in what's typically their busiest time of day.

"I'm not sure how this is going to effect our business. But, I know that everyone who's come in since the power outage has decided mostly not to buy things simply because we can't offer them what they wanted," said Roy.

The power also out at Bay City Mall, causing a huge problem for folks trying to wrap up their holiday shopping.

Valerie Daly knew something wasn't right the moment she pulled into the mall parking lot. "The screen is down and everything's shut off and I don't know, I'm going to go Christmas shopping some place else," said Daly.

The outage left more than 1,800 Consumers Energy customers in the dark, throwing many people for a loop during this very busy time of year.

"We don't have these kinds of mornings very often. It's is definitely something I'll be remembering. This is very unusual that this happens," Roy commented.

Representatives from Bay City Electric say the outage was caused by the loss of their transmission feed from Consumers Energy to two of their substations. They hoped to have power restored by early afternoon.
