Bay City Police Chief Michael Cecchini has a new title of public safety director. The promotion takes effect Jan. 1.
Cecchini will use his new role to administer, plan and direct the activities and operations of the city's Public Safety Department. The department includes law enforcement, criminal investigations, crime prevention, fire suppression and prevention, emergency medical services and disaster responses.
On Dec. 3, the Bay City City Commission adopted a public safety that merges the police and fire departments.
"Chief Cecchini is a well-respected police officer and a tremendous public servant who will continue to serve our community well. The city's police and fire departments will now be under the same leader. Further restructuring of the Public Safety Department will take place with Cecchini's leadership after the first of the year," said City Manager Robert Belleman in a statement.
Cecchini is a 25-year law enforcement veteran, beginning his career with the city of Phoenix, AZ, in 1987. He was sworn into office as the Bay City police chief on Dec. 11, 2006.
