MIDLAND COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

The New Year means one Mid-Michigan county has a new sheriff.

Midland County welcomes Scott Stephenson, who takes over as sheriff following the eight year tenure of Sheriff Jerry Nielson.

Nielson has officially retired as of Tuesday. Nielsen has worked in law enforcement for 40 years. Nielson cites building and filling a new jail was as one of his main accomplishments during his time as Midland County Sheriff.

Stephenson steps up to the roll as Sheriff with 16 years of law enforcement experience in Midland County. According to a biography posted on his Facebook page, he was born and raised in Midland and was a graduate of H.H. Dow High School.

After earning a BAS from Indiana University, he went on to graduate from the Northeastern Police Academy and started his law enforcement career as a road patrol deputy in Clare County.

Stephenson lives in Midland and has three children.
