SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -
It's the New Year and with that comes a new law cracking down on dog-fighting and cock-fighting.
Similar to drug and prostitution crimes, new penalties for the mistreatment of animals can land someone in prison for up to 20 years and fines costing up to $100,000.
Michigan State Senator Bert Johnson sponsored the bill and says the new penalties are the toughest in the country.
Republican Gov. Rick Snyder signed the legislation last month.
