Chiefs owner Clark Hunt is reportedly close to wrapping up a deal to name Andy Reid as Kansas City's head coach.
Reid, who was fired earlier this week as the Philadelphia Eagles' long-time head coach, met with Hunt and other Chiefs officials for nine hours on Wednesday.
ESPN is reporting that league officials say Reid and Hunt have reached an agreement on the major points and only "minor details" remain to be worked out.
"This is going to happen fast," ESPN reported a source close to Reid as saying.
A spokesman for the Chiefs said Thursday that no deal with anyone has been signed.
"As soon as we get word that anything is official, we will let everyone know," spokesman Brad Gee told KCTV5 News.
Reid allegedly would want Chiefs General Manager Scott Pioli replaced by a long-time associate of his who was just fired as general manager for the Cleveland Browns. ESPN says Reid put the Chiefs on the top of his list of jobs because he would have virtual control over the organization from Hunt.
Reid had planned to meet with the Arizona Cardinals ownership later this week about their opening. The NFL Network reported that Reid still plans to meet with the Cardinals and the San Diego Chargers about their coaching openings.
But other media outlets are saying Reid did not get on the Cardinals plane to travel to Arizona.
Pioli was apparently with Hunt and others as they met with Reid for more than nine hours on Wednesday.
But Reid reportedly will want Tom Heckert, who worked with him for a number of years in Philadelphia, as his general manager. Heckert was fired by the Cleveland Browns as their general manager on Monday. He joined the Browns in 2010.
Mortensen said Pioli was with Hunt when he met with two Atlanta Falcons coaches about replacing Romeo Crennel.
One of those coaches, Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter, signed a contract extension with the Falcons during the overnight hours. The Falcons announced Wednesday morning Koetter would be staying after signing the one-year extension.
Hunt and Pioli also interviewed Falcons special teams coach Keith Armstrong on New Year's Day.
Also along with Hunt and Pioli for the interviews were Ryan Petkoff, a vice president for Hunt Sports Group and one of Hunt's closest advisors, and Mark Donovan, the Chiefs president.
Snagging Reid would be a big get for Hunt. Reid has a history of cultivating NFL quarterbacks, starting with Donovan McNabb. He was the league's most tenured coach before he was ousted following Sunday's game.
Some media outlets reported Reid is a done deal in Arizona, but Hunt swooped in to interview Reid before the former Eagles coach travels west.
Reid, 54, is the winningest coach in Eagles franchise history. He frequently made the postseason, including losing in the Super Bowl to the New England Patriots.
But his teams have struggled in recent years, and his personal life has seen turmoil. Two of his sons were arrested, and one of those sons, Garrett, died in August at the Eagles training camp from an accidental heroin overdose. Garrett Reid had steroids in his training camp dorm room.
Some in the league have suggested that Reid take time off to focus on his family. But Reid, an intensely private man, is known for being consumed by football.
During his tenure, the Chiefs made 9 appearances in the playoffs and won 10 games. Reid supposedly wants the Chiefs job in part because of ownership, the fans, the five Pro Bowlers the team comes stocked with and that it has the first pick in the NFL draft.
