Snowfest organizers crank up snow machine

FRANKENMUTH, MI (WNEM) -

The snow is falling in Frankenmuth, at least the man-made kind. Snowfest organizers are already hard at work making sure there's enough snow for the festival later this month.

Scott Watkins has been making the snow for this event since they stopped relying on Mother Nature. He said this year they need to make even more.

We'll use approximately 450,000 gallons of water, or the equivalent of 45 in-ground swimming pools," said Watkins.

Preparations are starting about a week earlier than usual. Frankenmuth will welcome about 150,000 people for Snowfest. It runs from Jan. 23 to Jan. 28.

"For the first time in Snowfest history, we had to turn teams away. In fact, we had 26 applications for our state competition but we only have capacity to house 19, so it's a good problem to have though," said Snowfest Chairman John Shelton.
