Mail carrier killed in Montcalm Co. crash

Posted: Updated:

Michigan State Police troopers were called to the scene of a two-vehicle crash in Montcalm County on New Year's Day.

The crash happened around noon at Derby and Fleck Road in Belvidere Township.

Troopers said a tow truck, driven by a 21-year-old man, ran the stop sign while northbound on Derby Road. Investigators said the truck struck a passenger car driven by Jimmie Lee Kostal, of Shepherd.

Kostal was taken to Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids by helicopter. Troopers said he died from his injuries on Wednesday.

The driver of the tow truck was not injured.

Authorities said alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash. The tow truck driver was wearing his safety belt, but Kostal, a mail carrier on his route, was not buckled.

Troopers said their investigation into the crash is ongoing.
