The Genesee County Jail is cracking down on what types of clothes inmates can use while incarcerated.
Family and friends can no longer bring outside clothing items for inmates after someone tried to sneak drugs into the facility.
Genesee County Sheriff Robert Pickell said 50-year-old James Kreklau, of Flint, was charged with delivery of a controlled substance and introducing contraband into a jail. It's how Kreklau tried to get the drugs into the jail that's prompting major changes at the jail.
Pickell said Kreklau tried to smuggle heroin to a female inmate by sewing it into a bra. The sheriff said deputies inspect all clothing coming into the jail and while inspecting the bra, a deputy noticed the bra appeared to have been restitched. After opening the stitching, deputies said they found three small bags of heroin.
Pickell said he's tried to be mindful of the financial situation of the inmates, but he said he just can't do it anymore.
"I tried to go along with it, but we just can't do it any longer," said Pickell. "I'm being forced. They'll be the ones to complain about it, the inmates and their families, but they're the ones that forced me to change the policy by trying to sneak drugs and money into the jail."
The Sheriff said inmates will be able to purchase necessary undergarments through the jail's commissary.
