Girl receiving kidney transplant to head to Ann Arbor Thursday

Posted: Updated:

The road has been long for Stacy Schwerin and her daughter Jessica, but they are finally getting a gift of a lifetime.

It was last September that Stacy made a very public and unusual plea for help for her 10-year-old daughter, Jessica.

She stood outside of a Bay City Walmart, holding a sign that read, "Help please, my daughter needs a kidney, she's 10 years old, I cannot lose her."

The sign prompted Brian Martindale, a Bay City business owner, to get involved. Martindale said, "Two years ago I had tried to be part of a paired donation for a friend of mine and at that time it didn't work out physically for him".

After hearing of Jessica's situation, Martindale contacted the University of Michigan Kidney Donation Center.

This Friday, Brian and Jessica will undergo a combined eight to nine hours of surgery that will save her life. Jessica leaves Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. in a donated limousine.

WNEM TV5 will be there for the send off and will have all of the details on TV5 News at 5.
