MESA, AZ (CBS5) -

Mesa fire crews "hoofed it" to an unusual rescue Thursday afternoon.

They assisted in pulling a horse and buggy out of a canal.

Rescue personnel were called to the scene in the 2000 block of North Greenfield Road in east Mesa at about 3 p.m.

The horse had apparently veered too close to the edge of the canal to keep its distance from a car parked alongside the waterway, Mesa Fire Department Spokesman Forrest Smith said.

Suddenly, the carriage and horse ended up in the Central Arizona Project canal.

When fire crews arrived, the owner, whose identity wasn't released, was safe and attempting to get the horse to dry land, Smith said.

Crews went to work and disconnected the horse from the carriage and guided it through the 4-foot high water to an area where the animal could be walked up and out, Smith said.

The whole operation took less than 20 minutes, Smith said.
