FRANKENMUTH, MI (WNEM) -
A new university is opening up classrooms for mid-Michigan students in Frankenmuth.
Concordia University joins the list of schools already in the area.
"It seemed like a natural, it really did," said Dr. David Borst, dean of School of Business Administration at Concordia University.
On Thursday, Dr. Borst introduced the university as the newest attraction to Frankenmuth. Now those living in or near the city won't have to go far for a college degree.
"We're really excited about an educational offering. What we're going to be doing is offering programs for not only adults but traditional students here in Frankenmuth," said Borst.
Concordia plans to offer accelerated undergraduate classes like nursing, business and hospitality management. They'll also serve up some masters' level classes. The classes will be both in the traditional classroom setting and online, and degrees can be earned a bit quicker than most traditional universities.
"We can take advantage of what they have to offer, whether it's helping our workforce or helping residents move through career changes or career paths, it's really a nice, balanced approach to community development, and we're pleased that they're here," said Sheila Stamiris, director of Frankenmuth's Downtown Development Authority.
And you may wonder why Frankenmuth? Well, Concordia is a Lutheran university and the city has a large Lutheran population, so when the university looked for a place to expand, they said it just made sense.
"It's really kind of a mutual thing, desire on the part of Concordia, desire on part of the congregation and the community," said Bill Hoesman, former pastor of St. Lorenz Lutheran Church in Frankenmuth.
Classes are scheduled to start in March. If you are interested, you can visit the administrative offices located at 516 Main Street, Ste. B, in downtown Frankenmuth. You can also email Center Director Lynn Zuellig at email@example.com. For more information about Concordia University, CLICK HERE.
