Pension error at local hospital could force retirees to pay

Posted: Updated:
BAY COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

Retirees of McLaren Bay Region received an unexpected letter in the mail. A calculation error is affecting the pensions of 283 people.

About 213 employees were overpaid and will end up owing money. Shirley Kelly is one of those retirees. According to the letter, she owes $5,720.

The amount owed can be paid in full or with a reduction to the retiree's monthly check. Retirees must return the letter with their selection by Feb. 1 or their pension check will automatically be reduced.

"When you're penalized for someone else's error, it's not right," said Kelly.

About 70 employees were underpaid. Those who were underpaid can receive a lump sum or choose to have their monthly check increased.
