A new flu vaccine could soon be available at doctors offices around the country and it was developed in Connecticut.
Dr. Dan Adams, Protein Sciences in Meriden, said it took years to develop Flublock, which does not use the flu virus or eggs in the shot.
The company is currently testing the vaccine at the product realization lab at Protein Sciences.
Hundreds of thousands more are now in a warehouse in Kansas, ready to be processed and shipped. Adams said he hopes to be shipping it out by the end of the month.
"It's not that the current vaccine isn't a good product," Adams said. "But, a lot of people don't want to take it because there's a lot of stuff in there that isn't related to flu."
Flublock uses an insect virus and DNA technology to fight the flu, said Adams. Since it doesn't use eggs or the influenza virus, he said they're hoping more young people will be willing to get it.
"The peak of the flu season is supposed to be February and lots of egg-allergic people are calling in and saying, 'I've got to have it,'" Adams said. "'I gotta protect myself because I know its going to get really bad in February.' We're doing everything we can to protect these people."
Officials at Protein Sciences is currently working on an additive to the current flu shot to make it more effective.
They are also working to stop the flu from being contagious to possibly prevent pandemics in the future.
