Byron boy ready for speedfest

BYRON, MI (WNEM) -

It has been almost two months since 16-year-old Erik Jones captured the win at the biggest race in the country, the Snowball Derby. Since then the Byron, Michigan teen has been patiently waiting for this week. The week where he gets to travel down to Cordele, GA and compete again with some of the nation's best during Watermelon Capital Speedway's, SpeedFest in the ARCA/CRA Super Series event.

"Since the Snowball Derby I have had a great time spending time with my family but it is time to get back to racing," stated Jones. "I'm excited to be bringing back Rich Lushes as Crew Chief and Branden Lines as Spotter. Every time Rich and I work together we are fast, and I know even before going to the track with him that we are going to have a shot to win."

Last year the Erik Jones Racing team traveled to Cordele, GA for the first time to participate in the Champion Racing Association (CRA) sanctioned event at Watermelon Capital Speedway. Jones took no time adapting to the facility and qualified in the second position, sandwiched between NASCAR's David Regan and Kyle Busch. While running in the second position on lap 98 the motor decided to let loose ending the #4 Paragon Corvette Reproductions day.

"I enjoy the track at Watermelon Capitol Speedway, it has two grooves that make for some great racing," explained Jones. "I'll not only be coming down to Georgia with momentum from the Derby but with vengeance from the outcome of last year's race. We had a really good run going until the motor let loose right before the halfway break. I'm hoping to pick up where we left off and hopefully start the year off with a win"

Racing festivities for the ARCA/CRA Super Series will begin with a day of practice on Friday, January 25. Practice will pick back up on Saturday at 12:00pm followed by qualifying at 5:00pm. Sunday will kick off with an on track autograph session for fans at 12:30pm followed by the JEGS/CRA Premier Building Systems 100 and the day will be concluded with the ARCA/CRA SpeedFest 200.

Jones will be appearing at Watermelon Capitol Speedway to kick off his 2013 racing season. Plans for the 2013 season are still being finalized and will be released soon. Look for an official announcement to be taking place in the coming weeks.
